Uses of Pegasta 6mg Injection:

  • Chemotherapy-Induced Neutropenia
  • Bone Marrow Transplantation

How does the Pegasta 6mg Injection work?

Pegfilgrastim is a pegylated form of filgrastim which stimulates the growth, maturation and activation of neutrophils in the bone marrow, a type of white blood cell. This minimizes the risk of infections by reducing the length of neutropenia, or low neutrophil count, brought on by chemotherapy.

How to Use & Dosage

It is usually given as one subcutaneous injection for each chemotherapy cycle, usually 24 hours after chemotherapy is finished. When using the pre-filled syringe or On-body Injector at home, follow the instructions given with care and contact your healthcare team straight away if you think you may have missed a dose or had a partial dose.

You need to put your used needles and syringes in a special container called a sharps container. Do not throw them in a trash can. If you do not already have one, call your pharmacist or care team for a sharps container.

Talk to your care team about the use of this drug in children. Even if this medicine is indicated for some diseases, there are precautions to be taken.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

What is Pegasta 6mg Injection?

Pegasta 6mg is a long acting granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) Pegfilgrastim. It may be prescribed to possibly reduce the risk of infection in patients receiving chemotherapy.

How does Pegasta 6mg work?

It is believed to stimulate the production of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the bone marrow, which in turn may help the body fight off infections.

What conditions might it be prescribed for?

It is indicated in patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy associated with a clinically significant risk of febrile neutropenia (fever with low white blood cells).

How is it provided?

It is given as a single subcutaneous injection, usually at least 24 hours after completion of a cycle of chemotherapy.

What are the possible side effects?

Bone pain is one of the most frequently reported side effects. Patients also have the potential for muscle aches, fatigue or headache.

How long does it stay in your body?

Because it is a “pegylated” formulation, it may stay active in the body longer than regular filgrastim, which usually needs to be taken once per chemotherapy cycle.

Are there any major risks?

Rarely, it may potentially cause splenic rupture (enlarged spleen) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Tell your doctor about sudden abdominal or left shoulder pain.

Is it self-administrable?

In some cases, healthcare providers may even be able to teach patients or caregivers how to safely administer the injection at home.

Where should it be kept?

It should usually be kept in a refrigerator (2°C–8°C) and in the outer carton to protect it from light. Do not freeze or shake.

What if I get pain in my bones?

Your doctor may suggest standard over-the-counter pain relievers or other interventions if you experience bone pain.

Does it get rid of cancer?

No, it’s a supportive therapy. It is not used to treat cancer directly but may help to control some of the side effects of chemotherapy.

Is Pegasta prescription-only medicine?

Yes it is prescription only medicine.
