Product Description
Prevenar 13 Vaccine is a Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine which is used to help prevent infections caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is designed to guard against 13 different kinds of pneumococcus bacteria.
Uses of Prevenar 13 Vaccine:
- Pneumonia
- Meningitis
- Bacteremia
- Otitis media (middle ear infections)
How does Prevenar 13 Vaccine work?
Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide antigens conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein are presented to the immune system by Prevenar 13. This results in the generation of particular antibodies against 13 pneumococcal serotypes by activating B-cells in a T-cell-dependent manner. These antibodies prevent colonization, encourage phagocytosis, and neutralize microorganisms. Additionally, the vaccine creates immunological memory that lasts for quick reactions in the future.
How to Use & Dosage
The vaccine is administered by injection into a muscle.
Infants and young children typically get four doses of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15 or PCV20) at 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months of age.
Children aged 24 to 59 months may be eligible to receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccination if they did not receive the necessary doses as babies and young children.
Children and adolescents ages 6-18 with certain medical conditions who have not previously received recommended doses of PCV13, PCV15 or PCV20 may need pneumococcal conjugate vaccination.
For some adults with previous vaccination, a different type of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine may be needed. For more information, ask your health care provider.
