Product Description

Coly-Monas 1 MIU Injection contains Colistimethate Sodium, a polymyxin antibiotic that is used to treat serious infections caused by multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It is often reserved as a last resort when other antibiotics have not worked, typically in hospital.

Uses of Coly-Monas 1 MIU Injection:

  • Severe Bacterial Infections

How does Coly-Monas 1 MIU Injection work?

Colistin sodium is an inactive prodrug that is converted by the body to its active form after administration. The bactericidal effect of colistin results from its interaction with phospholipids and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. This binding breaks down the cell membrane, making it permeable so cellular contents flow out, killing the bacteria cells.

How to Use & Dosage

Typically given as an IV infusion. The dose depends on the severity of the infection, the body weight of the patient and renal function. Healthcare practitioners must carefully monitor it to make adjustments based on toxicity risk and therapeutic response.

Colistimethate injections are usually given every 6 to 12 hours as a muscle injection or as a powder and liquid mixture that is injected into a vein over a period of 3 to 5 minutes. How long you need therapy depends on your health, the type of illness and how you respond to the drug. It can also be administered as a 22-23 hour continuous infusion.

Even if you feel better, continue to use the colistimethate injection until you have completed the prescription. If you stop the colistimethate injection too soon or miss doses, your infection may not be fully treated and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.
